  The clinic is underfunded and understaffed, like all of the clinics that are part of the L.A. County Mental Health system. Psychiatrists and counselors have caseloads that number in the hundreds, but it is remarkable how well they perform in spite of a bad situation. As you might expect, upwardly mobile professionals look for work elsewhere as soon as they can, and there are high rates of turnover. As a rule I would be assigned a new case worker every six months or so, and I would be forced to tell my story from the beginning, while the poor case worker would thumb through a huge folder that had my name on it, in order to try to understand me. I fell in love with one therapist, but he suddenly disappeared, and he never warned me that he was leaving. Despite its flaws, the system somehow manages to work for the most commonly seen kinds of mental illness. But psychiatrists and case workers seem to be trapped in the prevailing paradigm of mental illness (favored by the county) that tries to cure everything by prescribing a drug. A different approach---Jungian analysis, for example---might be better on occasion, but the patient won't find Dr. Jung at this mental health center. As soon as I am old enough to get Medicare, I will go to another clinic. I might also mention that the recent county regulation that requires that patients be electronically scanned for weapons while entering the clinic has given a military look to the building, and it is common to see three armed guards in the foyer near the front door. Maybe I should know better, but I can't help but think that if it is so hard to get in, maybe I won't be able to get out if I say the wrong thing. I suppose that that fear is just a sign of my paranoia---after all, I do have a mental illness.
